2A state swimming: Tarpon Springs' Buckley finally nabs gold

ORLANDO — Tarpon Springs’ Kelsey Buckley had clearly finished first in the 200-yard individual medley, but she held onto the edge of the Central Florida YMCA pool and looked at the scoreboard to confirm her accomplishment.

Seeded second going into Friday’s Class 2A state meet, Buckley left the rest of the field behind to win in two minutes, 03.68 seconds.

Moments later, she had a gold medal placed around her neck and flashed a kid at Christmas smile when she was introduced as a state champion for the first time.

“I’m so excited I can’t stop smiling,” Buckley said.

The 200 IM is a grueling event, which requires 50 yards of near sprinting in the butterfly, back, breast and freestyle strokes. Last year, Buckley got off to a slow start and finished second, missing out on gold by 0.44 seconds.

This time, Buckley, a junior, left no doubt as she glided in the butterfly and sailed in the back to gain a sizeable lead. She never relinquished it the rest of the way, beating her closest competitor, Bradenton Lakewood Ranch’s Ashley Reid, by nearly two seconds.

“I knew I was ready for something big,” Buckley said. “I felt good the whole race, but I kept (Reid) in the corner of my eye. I had a feeling I accomplished what I wanted when I touched the wall.” Buckley wasn’t finished. In the 100 free, she made up ground in the final to vault from fourth place to finish as the runnerup in 51.51 seconds. “That was my last individual event of the meet, and I wanted to give it my all,” she said. “I didn’t really have time to think. I just had to give it my all and swim fast enough to finish in the top two.” Buckley finished her night by teaming with Kelly Verheyleweghen, Sara Meador and Melissa Damaske to finish eighth in the 200 free relay in 1:43.17.

With postseason meets starting next week, Buckley is in contention to win again. The junior is the top state returner in her classification in the 200 IM and is third in the 100 free, behind Tallahassee Lincoln’s Alex Merritt and Clay’s Kaitly Dressel.But Buckley is not satisfied with just being a top seed.

“I really want to win,” she said.

District swimming and diving - Admission: $5 per session
Format: Meets determine region berths, with 24 per event (district winners plus next overall best times). In diving, the top four in each district advance (minimum score of 280).

Coach Lisa and Nanette traveled with this group of athletes to Baltimore MD on Sunday, July 25th. Our journey was uneventful, great plane ride, easy transition to our rental vans, warm-up at University of Maryland pool was great, went to the grocery store for supplies, mini-hurricane/tornado came through - No power for the next 15 hours! Other teams were scared and nervous, our well-prepared FL hurricane kids were just fine with the side effect of no power. Flashlights in hand, we ventured to our rooms, got unpacked and enjoyed a quiet, dark evening in MD. The morning brought sunlight, but still no power - over 290,000 residents in MD/DC were without power. Our area was fortunate to have power restored by 9:00am. We headed off for some breakfast, coffee, then back to the pool. Early afternoon we headed out for an adventure in Annapolis MD. We were extremely fortunate to have Trevor Ackerman's brother, Brian Ackerman at the US Naval Academy provide a first-hand tour of the campus. Quite an amazing young man shared his very limited "Liberty Time" to share his knowledge of this beautiful and historic location. It was a great day and now we begin prep for racing on Tuesday.

Tuesday'- Piranha Prelim racing went well throughout the morning posting best times in many events. Kelsey Buckley earned the opportunity to return for 2 event finals (50 Free-A final, 200 IM-B Final) and Jason Williams in 50 Free-A Final. The evening races were phenomenal - Kelsey was seated 11th in the 200 IM, won the B Final and actually had the 2nd fastest race of the night! Her 2:22.26 earned her another JR National swim! Kelsey's second final of the night, 50 Free - captured 6th place at 27.04. Jason raced his first Nationals final and captured 7th place in Men's 50 Free with a time of 24.49. Jason's training and developed skill during this past year is quite impressive, he finished 85th in this event in 2009 - Great job Kelsey, Jason and Coach Lisa!

Wednesday- This day began with some great swims and some interesting twists. Best times for Blake Freeman, Jason Williams, Men's 400 Free Relay (Joey Steele, Blake Freeman, Michel Alissandratos, Jason Williams). A stomach bug found Rachael Freeman and she unfortunately spent the day in the hotel. We returned to Finals supporting our TYS friends.

Thursday - Back to racing and Finals for Kelsey and Jason in 100 Freestyle. Best swims also for Sarah Freeman, Joey Steele. Kelsey fought to the finish and won the "B Final" with a time of 59.51. Jason raced to 16th in the 100 Free - again following an amazing path from being 107th in 2009. It's been quite an amazing year of racing for this young man.

Coach Casey and Zac traveled to Sarasota with this group of PYP athletes. Weather was rainy, but somewhat status quo for this time of year. Coach Casey's weekend was a bit more eventful with a trip to the hospital and an appendectomy. Kudos to Coach Casey, who called from his hospital bed worried about the swimmers, the tents, the PYP families. We applaud you Coach Casey! What a great turnout of parents and swimmers for the PYP Team Meeting. We are very excited to have North Pinellas Piranhas back in the water and joining in on the fun! PYP Stroke Clinics are scheduled to begin: Monday, August 18th. Contact North Pinellas YMCA for details.

Day 1: We arrived at Tampa Airport, flew with our TYS friends to Baltimore, rented vans, drove through hail and a thunderstorm (go figure) and tried to check into our hotel... not ready... went to lunch, the grocery store, then checked in! Headed to the pool... beautiful facility... came out to find our driver window shattered. :(

Got a new car! What a day... Day 2: 5 hour YMCA Principles in Swimming and Diving Class... Coaches Meeting... another Coaches Meeting and during all that fun.. the kids had another opportunity to train. That evening we headed to Washington DC... Cheesecake Factory! The travel back and forth was "interesting" - thanks to Justin's blueline... we made it home safely! Day 3: First day of swimming! Preliminaries were amazing - 4 for 4 - Best times for everyone. Found Maryland CRAB CAKES-they rocked! Justin dropped 6 seconds in his 400 Free (4:22.68) Amanda dropped time in her 200 IM (2:33.17) Blake dropped almost 4 seconds in his 200 IM (2:19.23) JD shaved off more time in his 50 Free (26.03) and moved from 121st to 61st. Day 4: Justin dropped 4 seconds in his 200 Free (2:00.93) moved from 54th to 31st. Blake swam a best time in his 100 Fly (1:02.81). Day 5: Blake dropped 6 seconds in his 400 IM (4:55.95) tied for 17th... scheduled to do a swim off, but the other swimmer got scared and went home! Amanda dropped over 4 seconds in her 200 Back (2:30.95) Justin had 2 best times in 50 Fly and 100 Free. Tampa YMCA Swimming hosted this final opportunity to earn qualifying times and it worked!

Justin Chambers earned the opportunity to swim 50 Butterfly at Y-Nationals in Baltimore MD.

This meet was "quick" both in and out of the water! PYP had a great meet earning new Florida Junior Olympic, Southern Zone Sectional and YMCA National qualifying times.

In it's truest form, WFLA Lightning Invitational provided an exciting weekend of prelims/finals for our Piranhas. The weather was erratic, but our swimmers proved stronger than the storms. Katherine Mayer found her way to swimming Personal Bests in EVERY event she swam. FANTASTIC!

Thunderstorms, 35 mph blustery winds, cold air... nothing could stop these swimmers from competing! A group of Piranhas headed to Sarasota for the final yards competition of the season. Even with the harsh elements, swimmers from Palm Harbor, Clearwater and North Pinellas branches swam to 38 personal bests. Megan Kovac earned her first Junior Olympic qualifying time in 50 Backstroke and Rastko Jovanovic earned a new JO time and set a team record in 200 Butterfly.

ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) evaluates the success of each registered coach and awards a Level Certification. ASCA Levels range from 1-5. Coach Lisa is now included in a very elite group of coaches. (only 5-8% of the coaches in the USA are Level 4) Congrats on a job well done and to the future!
